February Friday 2nd An Roth, Craignure 6:30 for 7pm. Seumas Westland. “A close look at the Columnar Basalt of Mull, Staffa and Ulva.” Columnar basalt is one of the most stunning natural geological formations and the islands of Mull, Staffa and Ulva have it in abundance. More than just visually exciting, it also tells us a lot about the landscape onto which it was erupted and what the conditions were like at the time, 60 million years ago, when Mull was a very different place compared with today. James Westland tells its story in a lavishly illustrated talk which showcases this natural wonder”
March Friday 1st An Roth 6:30 for 7pm. A talk, via Zoom, by Sara McGourty, 'Digital Mapping for Heritage'. Sara works for the Ordnance Survey in Southampton. She will talk to us about the value of creating a digital map to show the heritage, both tangible and intangible, that includes all the sites on Mull. The talk will be delivered via Zoom. Please let us know if you will be joining us, we'd like to make Sara's talk worthwhile. Sara will also be delivering 4 training sessions for members of Argyll & Bute Museums & Heritage Forum. MH&AS is a member so please take advantage of this interesting and unusual resource.

May Friday 3rd An Roth, Craignure 6:30 for 7pm. Our well-known local archivist, Christine Leach, along with her co-authors, has published a book Hebridean Healers: The Beatons of Mull'. The story explores the Beatons’ arrival from Ireland in the early 12th century, when they joined the court of what was to become the Lords of the Isles. Trained in the classical Gaelic tradition, over the years their expertise led them to minister to Lords, Lairds and Kings of Scotland. At some point, one of the Beaton physicians came over to Mull in the entourage of chiefs of the Maclean clan and subsequently was awarded land – at Pennycross in the south of the island.
