Torr Aint

Torr Aint Fort

This is one of two forts sited in Glen Bellart.  The second is Torr a’ Chlachain Fort, which lies about 1.3 km to the west, and resembles Torr Aint in location and construction.

Torr Aint Fort lies about 900 m south east of Torr a’ Chlachain Farmhouse on the summit of a steep-sided, isolated ridge a short distance south of and above the deserted settlement of Aintuim.

A single wall surrounded a 70 m by 30 m space, but has been robbed out to such an extent that very few traces remain on the north-east and south-west sides.  Long stretches of the lowest course of stones of the outer face are still in place on the north-west and south-east sides.  Most of these are massive boulders measuring up to 1.2 m by 1.0 m and 1.2 m in height.  The entrance is to the north west and is 1.2 m wide.  The interior is featureless and has been ploughed in more recent times.
